The Sorcerer's Screed
Would you like to increase your prosperity, secure the love of the man or woman of your dreams, seek protection from evil forces or grumpy neighbours, catch a liar or raise the dead? Well, according to the writer of the contemporary re-imagining of old Icelandic spells, The Sorcerer's Creed, that's exactly what you can do.
The book is the world's most comprehensive collection of Nordic spells bringing Viking Age self-help into modernity. From dealing with difficult neighbours to calming your sheep, you'll have most bases covered. The spells were originally complied by Icelandic poet Skuggi in 19th century who gathered dozens of Icelandic manuscripts, preserved and lost. For the first time these spells have been published in English.
For those after a more tongue-in-cheek version there is also Icelandic Magic for Modern Living. Described as "a hilarious parody that includes magic spells that are made for modern purposes and contain everything you need to survive the 21st century". In this version you'll find some interesting brews for faster wifi and more likes on Instagram.
What we love most is the beautiful re-workings of the diagrams included in the spells, by Icelandic designer Arnar Fells Gunnarsson.
